Blog: GOTY 2014 – And the winner is…

Shovel Knight! We announced our five Game of the Year contenders a couple of weeks back, but none of them were quite as polished, addictive, or captivating from start to finish as Shovel Knight (which I reviewed back in September). Despite its retro style, Shovel Knight stands among modern games by introducing novel mechanics to a tried-and-true formula, all the while providing just enough difficulty to be moderately frustrating at times without feeling unfair. The bottom line is, this is one game you’ll want to play immediately if you own a Wii U, 3DS, or a PC (who doesn’t own a PC!). And if you’re like me, you’ll even get it again when it comes to PlayStation in early 2015 … with full trophy support!

As always, you can find the rest of our video game reviews here. Be sure to check back as we move into the new year, as there’s plenty more content coming down the pike!

  1. I’ve been wanting to play Shovel Knight, but as someone who is absolutely terrible at platformers (I’ve never gotten past world two in Super Mario Bros. 3 or New Super Mario Bros. for example), I think I might just be better off watching someone else play it.

  2. Haha, I also didn’t get past World 2 in SMB3! But I got a little farther in New Super Mario Bros. Shovel Knight was actually the first platformer I ever finished, but it took me north of 350 deaths and 13 hours to do it!

I would say give it a try. There are lots of checkpoints within stages and the game doesn’t penalise you for dying that much.
