Review: LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 (Vita)

Developer: Traveller’s Tales | Year: 2012 | List Price: $19.99 | Buy from Amazon

HPVITAWay back in the dark ages, one of the first videogame reviews I did was on LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4. It was super short and didn’t really tell you much about what I thought about the game, but you can see it here if you like. Anyway, I was looking for some shorter, cheaper games for Vita the other day, and decided to give the sequel a try. I knew it would be a downgrade as compared to the first LEGO Harry Potter game, which I’d played on Mac. It is, however, still a good game to have on the go, if a little kid-targeted and easy.

List: Baobab’s Favourite Nintendo Console Games (16-50)

16-50I just decided today to compile a list of all the games I remember playing on my Nintendo handhelds (this includes 3DS Virtual Console). Now I’ve ranked them! This reflects my current opinion of the games, or what I remember of them, anyway. My opinion may have changed somewhat from the past, and will do in the future as I discover new games and replay old ones. And maybe I played some that I forgot that I’ll have to add to the list. But here goes! These are places 16th to 50th (the rest are probably not worth mentioning). I’ll make another post with longer descriptions for the 1st through 15th.

Preview: LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7

After its huge success with LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4, TT Games is finally back with the second instalment in the LEGO Harry Potter series. LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7 is currently slated for release on 11 November 2011 (11/11/11) in North America and in Europe a week later. It will be out for pretty much every single gaming console: Nintendo 3DS, DS, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and even Next Generation Portable, which shouldn’t even be out until early 2012. On 6 October, a trailer was released showing some plot elements, new looks, and of course some classic LEGO humour.

What do you think? Personally I’m extremely excited, but I’ll have to wait for a Mac port before I can play.

Thoughts: Coconut’s Take on Pottermore

On the 5th day of the Magical Quill Challenge, I registered to become one of the million betas for Pottermore. After consistently checking my email for about a month, I finally received my welcome email at 5:07 PM yesterday. I am now a proud Hufflepuff student and owner of an unyielding 10 3/4 in. beech and phoenix feather wand. I am slowly advancing through the story (currently on Chapter 12) and enjoying site a lot.

Pottermore is a beautiful and fun website to explore, but it can be extremely irritating when you have to wait up to 45 minutes to access the site. The graphics are smooth and the details are absolutely stunning! It has a very simple interface, but the site lacks interactivity in many of the “moments”. So far, I think the most amazing part of the experience are the wands, which have characteristics that are really accurate (especially for my little brother). It seems as though J.K. Rowling can read minds because the questions seem quite generic at first but can somehow tell your personality. One huge problem is that there is no way to earn galleons, besides randomly finding them in the “moments”. Spells are okay, although I haven’t had a chance to duel because duelling seems to be down. Potions are really fun, but it is difficult and extremely time consuming. J.K. Rowling’s exclusive information is interesting to read and I am very happy that they made an easy way to tell the difference between exclusive content and events and information from the books.

Overall, I think Pottermore is a great beginning for a great online experience, but it definitely a work in progress. The site doesn’t really have many bugs, but there are still several different key elements that are missing or would make it more enjoyable.

Site: Doctor Who and Harry Potter sections temporarily unavailable

I (Baobab) will be leaving the site temporarily. I do not know when I will be back, and until then, there won’t be any new articles and reviews about Doctor Who or Harry Potter. When I get back, I will do my best to catch up with the reviews and articles.

Sorry for any inconveniences this may cause.
